Australia’s southernmost pub is shutting its doors, leaving the small community of Southport without its only shop, service station, post office and restaurant.
The Southport Hotel and Caravan Park had advised customers it will be closing until further notice.
The restaurant will shut on September 28, with the rest of the business to follow on October 1.
A staff member told Pulse they had been told the business would reopen, but did not know when.
“Like everyone else, we’ve heard a few different things,” they said.
The staff member did not want to say any more.
One concerned local told Pulse how much the town relies on the site.
“They are the only local service station, local store, restaurant, post office,” the local said.
The property was put up for sale in 2023 with an asking price hovering around the $2 million mark.
The listing described a two-storey building with a hotel bar, dining room, bottle shop and a convenience store offering takeaway and fuel.
There is also a two-bedroom residence, four motel units, a garage, workshop and storage areas on the lower floor.
The caravan park has two cabins, 22 unpowered sites and 19 powered sites, plus an amenities block and a camp kitchen.
The whole lot sits on close to 12 acres of flat to gently sloping land with a large dam and Settlement Creek running through the middle.
“Southport is a fishermans paradise and is extremely popular with tourists and holiday goers yet is becoming a permanent home for so many people as well,” the listing read.
“This hotel is crucial to the tourist industry and locals alike and has a fantastic reputation for amazing food and a great country pub feel.”
The pub has long been known as the last stop in the south, where travellers can refuel, grab supplies or sit down for a meal.
No reopening date has been given.
