A man from St Marys has returned to court over an alleged murder in the small east coast town last month.

Paul John McNally, 57, did not enter a plea during his appearance in the Launceston Magistrates Court via video link on Wednesday.

The murder charge stems from the March death of a 65-year-old Fingal Valley resident.

McNally is scheduled to appear in court again in May.

Tasmania Police Detective Acting Inspector Rob King said the day after the incident that the victim was found “unconscious and unresponsive” on the main road through St Marys when emergency services arrived.

“This is obviously a very sad situation and has a severe impact on such a small community,” he said.
