A St Marys man accused of murdering a 65-year-old in a violent altercation on the state’s east coast earlier this week has appeared in court.

Paul John McNally, 57, fronted the Launceston Magistrates Court on Thursday.

He did not enter a plea and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on April 10.

McNally was charged with murder on Wednesday night following the alleged deadly altercation.

Tasmania Police Detective Acting Inspector Rob King earlier said the victim was found “unconscious and unresponsive” on the main road through the small east coast town when emergency services arrived.

“This is obviously a very sad situation and has a severe impact on such a small community,” he said.

“At that particular time there were members of the public in the area, a number of whom witnessed the incident and … we would like to speak to those people that saw something or heard something.”
