Tasmanian criminals who “do not comply” with their home detention conditions will soon face stricter penalties with the introduction of a new ‘Breaches of Home Detention Orders’ bill.
The amendment has toughened the rules for offenders who have either removed or attempted to tamper with their electronic monitoring devices since the introduction of home detention provisions in 2019.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Guy Barnett said while only a “small number of offenders” fail to follow the rules, he hopes the changes will act as a ‘future deterrent’.
“This Bill aims to ensure more timely and consistent responses to breaches of home detention orders and will deter any person from removing or disabling an electronic monitoring device,” Barnett said.
“Under the amendments, it will be an offence for a person subject to a home detention order to tamper with, damage or disable any device used for the purpose of the electronic monitoring.”
“It will also be an offence for a third party to tamper with, damage or disable any device used for the purpose of the electronic monitoring.”
