Much of Tasmania’s western, southern and north-eastern regions can expect “damaging and locally destructive” winds today, according to the BOM.
A strong cold front, currently moving eastward across Tasmania, will produce wind gusts of up to 125km/h in the north-west before reaching the north-east in the early hours of the morning.
The BOM say the rest of the state will experience strong northwest to westerly winds, averaging 50 to 60km/h, with damaging wind gusts of around 100km/h this morning.
“Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover,” the BOM warn.

The severe weather warning comes as firefighters battle an out of control bushfire near Coles Bay, which has forced the evacuation of Friendly Beaches and the closure of the main road to and from the Freycinet Peninsula.
