Suspected dog attack kills little penguins at Tasmanian beach

Two little penguins have been found dead with injuries ‘consistent with a dog attack’ at Hellyer Beach in North-West Tasmania.

The Circular Head Council say they were notified about the penguin deaths by the Parks and Wildlife Service in mid-April after a resident found them on the beach.

“Investigations by Parks and Wildlife Officers and necropsy results from the lab have come back showing findings consistent with a dog attack,” the Council said.

“Little penguins are the smallest of all the penguin species, weighing an average of one kilogram. They have no means to defend themselves from introduced predators such as dogs.”

Signage in place at Hellyer Beach outlines the restrictions and rules for dogs in the area, and the Council say while dogs are allowed on the beach, they must be on a lead.

Circular Head Mayor Gerard Blizzard has been left disappointed by the incident, reminding people that the signage to protect Tasmania’s unique wildlife is there for a reason.

“I urge every dog owner to take responsibility for their dogs, always follow the directions on signage and please be aware and respectful of the local wildlife,” he said.

Council’s Compliance Officer will continue with regular patrols of this area and infringement notices will be issued to dog owners for incidents of non-compliance.
