Environmental activists have chained themselves to forestry machines in Tasmania’s Florentine today in protest against native logging.

The group, led by the Bob Brown Foundation, have “immobilised the logging machines that are destroying a giant tree filled forest”.

They say Police have been called to the site and are now “evicting forest defenders”.

In a statement to Pulse, a Police spokesperson said officers have arrested two people in relation to trespassing.

It’s understood around 20 people are involved in the “rescue mission” to save the “giant centuries old trees” and “prevent the devastating attack on this ancient forest”.

“There is no excuse to log the monster-sized trees in this forest, but there is an urgent need to end native forest destruction in this climate and biodiversity crises,” the Bob Brown Foundation said.

The protest comes days after video emerged showing a massive felled native tree being transported away from the site on a truck.

Former Greens leader and conservationist Bob Brown slammed the tree’s removal and pleaded with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to end native forest logging.

Brown said the ‘death of the tree was unnecessary and harmful to the environment’.

The tree is understood to have been cut down by Sustainable Timber Tasmania for safety reasons.
