Hobart’s iconic Tasman Bridge is one step closer to a major facelift, thanks to a $5.25 million injection from the Australian government.

The initial grant kicks off a $130 million joint project with the Tasmanian government to modernise the bridge for the first time since 1975.

The crucial infrastructure promises a raft of improvements, including wider and dedicated pathways for cyclists and pedestrians, higher barriers between vehicles and those walking and improved lighting.

Member for Lyons Brian Mitchell said “a lot has changed” with the vital link between east and west since 1975.

“With a bigger population, more cars and an increased number of heavy vehicles, these upgrades improve road safety and the safety of pedestrians,” he said.

“The Tasman Bridge is in constant need of maintenance and making sure that we stay on top of the issues.”
