A new multi-million-dollar function room offering views of the Hobart waterfront has been proposed by the developers behind the Tasman Hotel.
Plans have this week been lodged with the City of Hobart for an approximately 600m2 addition to the existing Parliament Square development, which would be constructed over a portion of the plaza deck behind Parliament House.
Designed with ceramic tiles and glazing to blend with the existing architecture, the $9 million function room will accommodate up to 210 seated and 350 standing guests.
“The Tasman Hotel has established itself as a premier accommodation offer for Hobart and attracts national and international visitors to enjoy the heritage and new buildings, the views, food and proximity to Sullivans Cove and Salamanca Place,” the application read.

“The eastern terrace of Parliament Square has, since the project inception, been identified for an active use.”
The developers believe the proposed function room will “enhance the attractiveness and visitation” of the precinct.

“The proposed will have a respectful relationship to the street and surrounding heritage places including Parliament House. It will complement the approved Parliament Square redevelopment … and is recommended for approval.”
Former Tasmanian Government Architect Professor Peter Poulet praised the proposal, saying it would “boldly enliven both the plaza and the public realm beyond”.
“The proposed built form will complete the framing of Parliament Square, now to be surrounded by active edges and a variety of activities on offer,” he said.
The City of Hobart is accepting submissions on the application until March 7th.
