This July is about to be crowned Tasmania’s warmest on record, according to a climatologist at the Bureau of Meteorology.

Dr Simon Grainger told AAP temperatures across eastern Australia have been “very much above average” throughout the month.

“Even though the month has still got a few days to run, it’s virtually certain that it will be Tasmania’s warmest July on record,” Grainger said.

“The July temperatures in Tasmania are expected to be around 2C above average. The previous record was around 1.6C above average.”

Dr Grainger said July temperatures across the country are in the warmest 10% of all years since observational records began.

Last month was just as hot, with the seventh warmest June on record recorded in Australia.

The announcement comes as the World Meteorological Organisation revealed July “is on track to be the [earth’s] hottest July and the hottest month on record.”
