Tasmania has officially signed on to the Marinus Link undersea cable project, with Energy Minister Nick Duigan today confirming a multi‑billion‑dollar agreement with the federal government has been reached.
Duigan said he finalised the deal on Thursday night. He is expected to provide more details at a press conference this afternoon.
The Marinus Link will see the construction of a second underwater electricity cable and new transmission infrastructure across Bass Strait, connecting Tasmania’s power grid with Victoria’s.
The project is designed to give mainland Australia greater access to Tasmania’s renewable energy, particularly hydro power, while also boosting the island state’s own energy security.

The announcement comes as Tasmania remains in caretaker mode following the recent election, where no party won a clear majority to form government.
