Four Tasmanians have made their mark at the under-20 Athletics World Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Hammer thrower Xavier Leauma, decathlete Xavier Davie and heptathletes Izzy Wing and Bailey Van Den Broek all represented Australia at the event, which ran from August 5 to 9.
Leauma delivered the strongest individual result, finishing eighth in the 6kg hammer final with a throw of 71.97 metres.
The 17-year-old Eastern Suburbs Athletics Club member had earlier thrown 71.77m to qualify sixth from 24 starters.
Davie finished 15th in a decathlon field of 34, saving his best for the final event.
He ran a personal best time of 4:27.49 in the 1500m to finish second in that race.
The 17-year-old UTAS Athletics Club member also set personal bests of 1.91m in the high jump and 3.90m in the pole vault.
His total of 7338 points broke his own state record of 7236, set at the Australian championships in April.
Wing and Van Den Broek finished 17th and 18th respectively in a heptathlon field of 24, separated by just 75 points.
Wing, a 19-year-old from North Launceston Athletics Club, recorded her best result in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.13 seconds, for 10th place and 960 points.
She finished with a total of 5137 points.
Van Den Broek, an 18-year-old from OVA Athletics Club, also scored highest in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.64 and placed fifth in the shot put with 12.67m.
She finished with 5062 points.
Tasmanian Institute of Sport Athletics State Performance Advisor Jason Allie said the four athletes had all enjoyed breakthrough seasons.
He said they were “ideally placed to be pushing for open national selection ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.”
