Fireworks won’t illuminate New Year’s celebrations for those gathered on Burnie’s foreshore this year, with the local council instead opting for an ‘environmentally friendly’ LED light show.
The north-west Burnie City Council, in partnership with local radio station Sea FM, will be launching an “environmentally conscious” drone show on New Years Eve, which they’ve coined as the “first of its kind” for the state.
“Unlike traditional fireworks, the Drone NYE Sky Show is designed to be electronic fireworks, eco-friendly, quiet for both humans and pets and free from air pollution,” an event spokesperson said.
“The use of drones ensures a quieter celebration, making it more enjoyable for residents, visitors and their furry companions.”
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions from locals, with some upset that they won’t be able to see ‘traditional fireworks’ along the coast, while others are welcoming the change.
“I’ve wanted to watch a drone light show for SO long in person and we’re going to have it happen right here Burnie,” said one social media user.
The drone show will light up for families at 9:30pm on December 31 and once more at the stroke of midnight to welcome in 2024.
It is understood ‘changes in regulations’ meant fireworks weren’t able to be held at the Burnie Port this year, sparked by exclusion zones with new TasPorts infrastructure.
Fireworks haven’t been held in Burnie since 2021, after a qualified pyrotechnic technician was unable to be found in time for last years celebrations.
Devonport, Launceston and Hobart, meanwhile, will all continue to host fireworks shows on New Year’s Eve.
