Average power prices in Tasmania are set to soar by over nine percent in the next financial year.

Aurora Energy has been given the green light to impose an additional 9.51 percent increase on average for its residential and small business customers, effective from next month.

For residential customers with median electricity consumption, this means they will be burdened with an extra $200 annually.

For the average small business, the financial blow will vary between $126 and $284 per year, depending on the tariff.

This year’s surge in power prices follows a steep climb of nearly 12 percent experienced last year.

Joe DiMasi, the Tasmanian Economic Regulator, has assured the public that certain vulnerable customers will benefit from government rebates, and that Tasmania’s latest price hike is among the most lowest in the country.

“As Tasmanians ourselves, we understand the difficulty already being felt by Tassie homes and businesses. We have more support than ever to help Tasmanians doing it tough.

He encouraged any Tasmanian who may be struggling to keep on top of their energy bill and are in need of support to get in contact.

“The sooner they get in touch, the sooner we can help”.
