Tasmanian Government understood to ban TikTok on state devices

The Tasmanian Government will announce a ban on the use of TikTok on all government devices, a government source has revealed.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff has been forced to shut down his new TikTok account, @jrocktock, which he had created less than two weeks ago.

This move comes after the Federal Government implemented a similar ban on the popular social media app on all its devices.

The Tasmanian Government is the largest employer in the state, and it is not yet clear how many Tasmanians will be affected by the ban.

This decision also comes as the Tasmanian Government continues to deal with a cyber attack that may have accessed data from the Tasmanian Department for Education, Children, and Young People.

A State Government spokesperson stressed that there is ‘no confirmation’ any data has been accessed, but is asking Tasmanians to remain vigilant.

TikTok has become a popular social media platform, particularly among younger users, but has faced scrutiny over its data collection and privacy practices.

The app has also been subject to bans and restrictions in several countries, including India, which banned it outright in 2020.
