A southern Tasmanian man had his car seized by police after a mobile speed camera detected his vehicle travelling at more than 70 km/h above the speed limit last week.

The car was caught going 152 km/h in an 80 km/h zone along Boyer Road near Bridgewater on Tuesday – 72 km/h over the speed limit.

Police say they immediately clamped the car following the incident, with officers authorised to clamp vehicles travelling at 45 km/h or more above the speed limit under Tasmanian law.

Inspector Jim Semmens warned that speeding at any level is not safe and that police will continue to clamp or seize vehicles detected travelling at excessive speeds.

For repeat offenders, the police will apply to the court to have their vehicles forfeited entirely.

“We are doing all we can to help keep the community safe on our roads, and we need all members of the community to do their bit by following the rules and driving safely,” Semmens said.

He urged the public to report any dangerous driving behaviour immediately to the police on 131 444.
