A Tasmanian man charged over the fatal shooting of a police officer is yet to enter a plea, five months after the alleged incident.

Leigh Geoffrey Sushames, 46, appeared via video link from Risdon Prison at the Devonport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He is facing murder and attempted murder charges following the death of Constable Keith Smith, who was allegedly shot at a property on Alisons Road in North Motton in June.

Constable Smith was attending the property to serve a court-ordered repossession notice when he was allegedly fatally wounded.

Sushames is also charged with aggravated assault and 10 summary offences, including weapons and drug-related allegations.

His barrister Greg Richardson told the court he had hoped to move the case forward but was not yet in a position to do so as Sushames was waiting on an assessment.

He requested his client appear in person at the next hearing rather than via video link, saying it would be beneficial for them to be in the same room.

Richardson said he would apply, if required, to have Sushames transported from Hobart for an in-person appearance.

Magistrate Evan Hughes remanded Sushames in custody to reappear on December 17 at 2:15pm.
