Two aged care facilities on the East Coast and in the Huon Valley are set to receive a combined $25 million in federal funding for upgrades that will result in more rooms.

The not-for-profit May Shaw Health Centre in Swansea and Huon Regional Care will use the money to modernise their facilities and increase the number of available aged care beds.

Labor’s Brian Mitchell said the $8.2 million grant for May Shaw is “great news” for the East Coast.

“Supporting aged care in the regions helps older locals to access quality aged care services while remaining close to their families and cultural connections,” he said.

Local MP Rebecca White said the funding was an “investment in looking after the people who have looked after us”.

“It’s such good news that May Shaw Health and Aged Care has been successful in securing federal funding to expand to offer 17 more rooms and upgrade five others,” she said.

“I can’t wait to see progress on this multi-million dollar development begin.”

The larger grant of $17 million will go towards expanding Huon Regional Care, which operates three care centres and a home care service in the Huon Valley.

The investment will allow the Huon to build 21 new residential rooms and refurbish its existing 89 rooms and common areas.
