Hobart City Mission has appointed TasCOSS chief executive Adrienne Picone as its new CEO, with the transition planned to take place by mid-2026.

Picone will succeed current CEO Harvey Lennon following what the organisation describes as a “careful and considered recruitment process” designed to ensure continuity for both organisations.

Hobart City Mission Board Chair John Minchin praised Picone’s credentials for the role.

“Adrienne is an outstanding leader with deep experience in the community services sector and a strong track record of advocacy for Tasmanians doing it tough,” Minchin said.

The appointment comes during a challenging period for the 174-year-old charity, which has faced increased demand amid rising cost-of-living pressures and reduced funding.

Minchin acknowledged Lennon’s contributions during his tenure.

“Harvey has shown exceptional dedication, compassion and resilience during a time of rising demand,” he said.

“The board is deeply grateful for his leadership and the strong foundation he leaves behind.”

Lennon said he is confident his successor will continue to lead Hobart City Mission’s distinctly local focus.

“Hobart City Mission is a fiercely local organisation with more than 174 years of service to the people of Southern Tasmania,” he said.

“We are not national and not international. We focus on our neighbours, our communities and the people we pass in the street each day.”

Picone brings extensive experience in the community sector, having led TasCOSS since 2020 and previously serving as CEO of Volunteering Australia.

Her career began working directly with families experiencing poverty and disadvantage.

“Hobart City Mission is a deeply respected organisation with a proud history of standing alongside people when they need it most,” Picone said.

“What particularly resonates with me is its strong local focus.”

“It fills gaps where support is missing, advocates for people whose voices are often unheard, and works in partnership with a generous community.”
