A Tasmanian woman has died while snorkelling off Moreton Island during a Carnival cruise ship stopover, in one of two separate incidents to hit the vessel within hours.

The 67-year-old, who has not been publicly identified, was a passenger on the Carnival Splendor when she got into trouble in the water on Friday, April 17.

As reported by the Brisbane Times, rescuers brought her ashore and tried repeatedly to revive her on the beach, but she could not be saved.

Authorities are yet to say what caused her to get into difficulty.

Hours after her death, a second incident unfolded aboard the same ship when a man in his 70s went overboard around 10:30pm, roughly 30 kilometres north-east of Cape Moreton.

The two incidents are not believed to be linked.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) launched a large-scale search for the missing man, deploying jets, helicopters and surface vessels before calling off the operation on Saturday evening.

Queensland Police resumed the search on Sunday morning.

A Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson said the company was supporting the families involved and assisting authorities with their inquiries.

The Splendor, delayed by the overboard search, is now expected to arrive in Sydney at 6pm on Sunday, 12 hours later than scheduled.

Anyone needing support can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636.
