Tasmanians are paying the lowest electricity prices in the country, but more locals are struggling to pay their bills than anywhere else, according to a new report.

The state’s Economic Regulator has confirmed that Tasmania offers the cheapest electricity rates for residential customers and small businesses.

However, higher energy usage in the state means that Tasmanians are facing some of the highest overall electricity bills in the country, compounded by limited options due to fewer retailers in the market.

Treasurer Guy Barnett said the figure applies to all Tasmanian regulated residential customers on all tariffs.

“This is really good news when we know that cost of living is a top priority for all Tasmanians and especially our government,” he said.

“In addition to having the lowest prices in the nation, Tasmanians also have some of the most generous concessions in the country.”

Barnett said residential customers received $250 through renewable energy dividend payments, while “every small business in Tasmania” got $300 in support.

“It’s been really appreciated because cost of living is a top priority issue,” Barnett said.

“During this financial year, as a result of combined state and federal energy bill relief, every Tasmanian household is receiving at least $550 in energy bill relief and small businesses $625.”

Criterion Jewellers owner Amanda Dillon said, like many others, that electricity was essential to her business.

“The lighting that we need for the store to show the gemstones and diamonds is very important, so we have to get that right,” she said.

“And it’s good news that we have the relief on our energy bills.”
