Tasmanians in Sorell and Glenorchy have just one week left to cast their votes in local government by-elections before polls close next Thursday.
The elections were called after Bec Thomas and Kerry Vincent, former mayors of Glenorchy and Sorell respectively, were elected to state parliament.
In Sorell, seven candidates are vying for the mayoralty and five for the vacant councillor position.
Glenorchy voters have a choice of seven mayoral candidates and 11 vying for the council seat.
Electoral Commissioner Andrew Hawkey encouraged voters to return their ballots promptly to avoid non-voter penalties.
“The best way to avoid a fine is to complete the ballot papers and return them as soon as possible,” he said.
“Voting in local government elections is compulsory and ballots must be received by the close of poll at 2pm on Thursday 20 June 2024.”
In addition to the by-elections, Glenorchy City Council has called an elector poll to gauge community sentiment on the future of the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool.
Voters will be asked whether they support urgent repairs and reopening of the pool with committed government funding and whether the council should apply for future funding to redevelop it into a modern facility.
As of Wednesday, 26.38% of Glenorchy electors and 27.34% of Sorell electors had returned their ballots.
Counting will begin the day after polls close.
