Hotel occupancy levels across Tasmania have bounced back for the first month of Spring, with the coming months looking just as good, according to the Tasmanian Hospitality Association.

The THA’s September ‘Hotel Occupancy Report’ shows 70.34% of available rooms across the state were filled last month, an increase of nearly 10% from August and the first time numbers have been higher than 70% since March.

The Association say the spring surge is a welcome sign for operators as the build up to summer begins.

“After the traditional mid-year lull, which saw a return to pre-pandemic levels in the low 60% range due to factors such as rising living costs and pent-up demand for overseas travel,” they said.

In the north, providers saw a jump of more than 15% in occupancy to 70.71% compared to the previous month, while the south reached 78.97%, up by 10%.

The north-west also experienced an increase of more than 7% from August, reaching 51.88%, and for the first time, the East Coast, previously included in northern figures, recorded 52.79% of rooms in the region booked.

Freycinet Lodge general manager Trent Thompson said September was a “steady” month for them and the coming summer months between January and March is already “above and beyond” what they did last year.

“We’ve already got that booked in, so that’s strong for us. And between now and December, it’s looking really steady,” he said.
