Children’s wards in major hospitals across Tasmania are set to be given a new name: the Wombat Ward.

The decision was made by the State Government, with help from young Tasmanians, as part of their efforts to make sure hospitals are safe and welcoming for kids.

To figure out the new name, the government asked young Tasmanians between 8 and 18 years old, as well as health department staff, for their opinions.

Jeremy Rockliff, who is both the Premier and the Minister for Health, said that it was really important to involve the young Tasmanians in choosing a name that they felt comfortable with.

“Consulting with young Tasmanians on the new name of children’s wards at public hospitals in Tasmania has been important to gain their valuable input on a name that is welcoming and safe for them,” Premier Rockliff said.

The Department of Health will now spend the next few months finalising the new name and imagery for the children’s wards.
