Tasmanian football players have paid tribute to club legend Dion ‘Diesel’ Mead this weekend, with his home club Lauderdale emerging victorious in a tribute match against North Hobart.
Players took to the field with black armbands today following a minute of silence in memory of Mead, who tragically passed away in a car crash last weekend.
Fundraising efforts have passed over $16,000, with the community coming together to support the grieving Mead family.
“This is a gesture to give back to a family who have given so much of their time and resources into volunteering for multiple organisations around Hobart,” the GoFundMe reads.

Tributes pour in for Hobart dad and footy legend Dion Mead
Hobart dad and local footy legend Dion Mead is being remembered after passing away recently.
A life member of the Lauderdale Football Club and friend to all, Club president Andrew Lyden said Dion’s impact both on and off the field was immeasurable and his passing has left a ‘tremendous hole that will be impossible to fill’.
“On behalf of the Lauderdale Football Club, I offer our deepest condolences to Kristi, Noah, Sophie and the extended family regarding the devastating loss of our esteemed Life Member Dion Mead,” he said.
“Dion was an icon in our Club and a dear friend to everybody who knew him. His tireless work for the Club and the support and help he willingly gave to all those he met will never be forgotten.”
Lyden said every member of the club’s playing group, volunteers and members had benefited by knowing Dion.
Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley also paid tribute to Mead and offered his condolences to the club in what is a ‘very sad time’.
In honour of his memory, players and referees will wear black armbands and hold a minute of silence before each game this week.
