Tassie snake catchers received over 70 calls for help on Boxing Day as snakes slithered into homes across the state!
North West Snake Catchers have been getting around 20 calls per day from people who have discovered snakes on their properties, signalling the start of the busy season which usually runs from January to March.
Tasmania is home to three types of land snakes: the tiger snake, the lowland copperhead, and the white-lipped snake.

All three species can inject venom, though the venom of the white-lipped snake has never been recorded as causing a human death.
Dogs are also at risk of being bitten by snakes and it is important to seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible if this occurs. In 2020, three pet dogs died from snake bites in Hobart’s suburban backyards.
To prevent snakes from entering homes and other buildings, it is important to be vigilant on hot days and keep doors closed.
