A 17-year-old boy has died from head injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash in Launceston on Saturday night.

The teenager was the pillion passenger on a trailbike that collided with a car at the Norwood roundabout intersection of Boiton Hill Road and Norwood Avenue around 8:45pm.

He was initially treated at the Launceston General Hospital before being flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition.

Police on Tuesday confirmed he had since passed away from his injuries.

The second teenager, who was driving the motorcycle, remains in the Launceston General Hospital receiving treatment for leg and pelvic injuries.

Initial investigations suggest neither rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, police say.

The driver of the Subaru SUV involved was not physically injured in the crash.

Police said their thoughts were with the boy’s family and that a report will now be prepared for the coroner.
