Two teenagers are in trouble with authorities after they were caught driving an allegedly stolen Toyota at speeds exceeding 160km/h through Tasmania’s Midlands this afternoon.
According to police, the pair will spend the night in custody after allegedly attempting to evade officers who had spotted them on the Midland Highway near Stonor at around 3:30pm on Sunday.
Police say the car left the highway and travelled down Mud Walls Road near Jericho, allegedly driving on the “incorrect side of the road whilst travelling about 160km/h over a sharp crest and into a right hand bend”.
“Police allege the vehicle continued along Mud Walls Road at high speeds, overtaking two vehicles,” a spokesperson said.
“The vehicle was later located dumped about 10kms down Lovely Banks Road on a rural property.”
Both teenagers fled the scene and were arrested by police shortly before 4pm.
They were taken the Hobart Police Station, where investigations are underway to determine potential charges, including motor vehicle theft and aggravated evade police.
Police are asking anyone who may have dashcam footage of a white Toyota Camry sedan with the registration K23YW travelling on the Midland Highway from Launceston to come forward, either directly to them or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
“Investigations are ongoing and police are seeking information in relation to the incident … particularly in relation to the way the vehicle was being driven,” police said.
