Telstra is warning that some Tasmanians may be unable to call Triple Zero in an emergency tonight, as urgent infrastructure works are undertaken.

The company is conducting “critical” maintenance on its fibre cables through the Central Highlands from midnight through to 6am Friday, which they say will take parts of the Central Highlands and Derwent Valley region offline.

“The works will impact Telstra mobile and fixed services in Westerway, Wayatinah, Tarraleah, Derwent Bridge, Maydena and Strathgordon,” Telstra’s Tasmanian Manager Michael Patterson said.

“Where there isn’t an alternative mobile network, access to Triple Zero may be impacted.”

Telstra have recommended customers who can access a Wi-Fi connection use Wi-Fi calling.

“This is a free setting on most popular mobile phones and allows your mobile to use a Wi-Fi network to make and receive mobile calls,” they said.

“Customers should receive a text advising of the upcoming work. NBN internet services and mobile coverage from other providers should not be impacted.”
