Thick fog at Hobart Airport is causing major delays for travellers this morning, with aircraft unable to takeoff or land due to limited visibility.

Several Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Qantas flights are circling in holding patterns above Great Lake and the east coast.

The bad weather has caused a surge of interest among aviation enthusiasts, with Tasmanian airspace temporarily topping FlightRadar24’s ‘Most Tracked’ list globally.

Jetstar flight JST701, originally scheduled to depart Melbourne at 6:10am, was delayed until 8:59am before ultimately diverting to Launceston.

The flight touched down shortly after 11am on Saturday.

A Royal Flying Doctor Service Air Ambulance attempting to reach Hobart from Burnie at 10:30am was also forced to divert.

While no departing flights from Hobart have been cancelled this morning, significant delays of three to four hours are anticipated.

Impacted passengers are advised to contact their airlines for the latest information and rebooking advice.
