Thick smoke from Geeveston house fire closes Huon Highway

Updated 9:45am, Saturday July 20: Firefighters have found the body of a man inside a Geeveston home that was engulfed by fire overnight.

Tasmania Fire Service crews were called to the Huon Highway property around 9:30pm on Friday.

The house was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived and “took a considerable amount of time to extinguish”, a police spokesperson said.

“Sadly, the body of a man was found deceased inside the house,” they said.

“The body is believed to be that of a man in his 70s, who was the sole occupant of the property.”

Investigations into the cause of the fire will continue today.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The Huon Highway remains closed and all motorists are being asked to detour via Scotts Road.

Earlier: Firefighters are battling a blaze that has completely engulfed a house in Geeveston.

Tasmania Fire Service crews from Geeveston, Franklin and Huonville arrived at the Huon Highway address just after 9:30pm on Friday to find the property “fully alight”.

Police said thick smoke is billowing from the property, creating a hazard for motorists.

As a result, the highway has been closed in the vicinity of the fire and all motorists are being asked to detour via Scotts Road.
