The Launceston General Hospital is back on lockdown following a suspected gastroenteritis outbreak, the third outbreak in just three months.

Patients on Ward 5A have developed gastro-like symptoms, prompting the closure of the ward to new admissions and visitors.

The Department of Health is working with staff and locked down patients to provide support and ensure continuity of care, but may grant visitors an exemption to enter on compassionate grounds.

The hospital is implementing infection control measures such as enhanced cleaning, limiting movement, and the use of personal protective equipment.

The community is advised to only visit the LGH’s emergency department for emergencies and consider alternative options for non-urgent health needs.

Visitors displaying symptoms consistent with gastroenteritis, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhoea are urged not to visit patients in the hospital.
