Students at Huonville High School have written, directed and staged their own original theatre production from scratch.
The play, Love, Chaos and the Lab Next Door, was built entirely by students who started with nothing more than a list of characters they had always wanted to play.
From there, they developed storylines, improvised scenes, recorded and transcribed their work, then edited it all into a finished script.
Drama teacher Jessica Lee said the project stands out because every part of the creative process has been student-led.
“The students conceived the characters, built the story, refined the script, developed the staging and worked alongside fellow students to design the lighting and sound,” she said.
“As a rural school, we are proud to provide opportunities that empower young people to take ownership of their learning and develop the literacy, teamwork, communication, negotiation and creative thinking skills that will serve them long after they leave the classroom.”
Lee described the production as more than a typical school play.
“This isn’t just a school production,” she said.
“It’s a story about what young people can achieve when they are trusted to lead.”
The play is a darkly comic story set in a town where nothing stays normal for long.
When a mysterious figure is uncovered and a child vanishes, suspicion grows around a strange plague doctor and his unsettling experiments.
Unlikely relationships form at a place called the Café of Love as secrets surface and danger creeps closer than anyone expects.
The production runs on October 1 and 2 at Huonville High School.
Doors open at 6pm for a 6:30pm start.
