Thousands of runners and walkers are expected to light up Hobart’s waterfront on Saturday night when a new glow run makes its debut in the city.

The inaugural Hobart Light Night Glow Run and Walk will start at the Royal Hobart Regatta Grounds from 6pm tomorrow.

Participants can choose from a 600-metre kids’ event, for ages nine and under or two, four and eight-kilometre courses.

The event follows a sold-out glow run in Devonport that attracted 2,400 participants. Organisers are hoping to draw a similar crowd in Hobart.

Race director Brian Lyons said organisers were excited to bring the event to Hobart.

“The Devonport event was incredible. Thousands of people came together to run, walk and celebrate being active,” Lyons said.

“More than half of the field were aged under 12 and it was amazing to see kids getting active in such a fun and inclusive way.”

“We can’t wait to share that same energy with Hobart.”

The evening will include live entertainment along the course, food vans, glow zones and glow-themed activities.

$5 from every four and eight-kilometre registration will be donated to Speak Up Stay ChatTY.

The mental health organisation was founded by Mitch McPherson following the death of his younger brother, Ty, in 2013.

The organisation says it has reached more than 25,000 Tasmanians this year.

It is marking 13 years of encouraging conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.

The event is supported by St Lukes.

“The glow run fosters movement and connection – both key to St Lukes’ vision of making Tasmania the healthiest island on the planet,” Head of Community Engagement Nikki Long said

“We especially love that this event leverages the power of community, making exercise fun, encouraging people to motivate each other and setting a great example for our kids.”
