Three teenagers charged after stolen BMW stopped on Bass Highway

Three teenagers have been charged after a stolen BMW was stopped on the Bass Highway in Tasmania’s north-west on Monday night.

Tasmania Police said the white BMW iX3 was taken from Kings Meadows, in Launceston’s south, before officers were alerted to it being driven dangerously near Westbury around 8:30pm.

Officers from the state’s northern and western districts deployed road spikes after the driver allegedly failed to stop.

Police said the vehicle continued along the Bass Highway towards Devonport before coming to a stop near the Mersey Community Hospital at Latrobe, about 90 kilometres from where it was taken.

The three people inside allegedly ran from the car and were arrested a short time later.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with aggravated evade, stealing and drink driving offences.

Two 18-year-old women have been charged with stealing, breach of bail and trespass.

All three are expected to appear in court at a later date.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the vehicle on the Bass Highway on Monday night to come forward.

“Anyone with dash cam or other relevant footage of [the vehicle] travelling on the Bass Highway … is asked to contact police and quote OR805229,” a spokesperson said.

“Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers Tasmania on 1800 333 000 or at crimestopperstas.com.au.”
