Thunderstorms, heavy rain to lash Launceston and north-west overnight

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecasted to lash much of the north and far north-west overnight tonight as the Easter long weekend draws to a close.

The Bureau of Meteorology expects Smithton, Launceston, George Town and Longford to be impacted by the severe weather as a low-pressure system crosses the state.

“A thick cloud band moving south over Tasmania ahead of a strong upper trough will lead to a risk of heavy rainfall about the north of the state early Tuesday morning,” the BOM are warning.

“Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding is forecast for the Central North district and parts of the Midlands, North West Coast and Western districts early Tuesday morning.”

“Six-hourly rainfall totals between 30mm to 50mm are likely, with isolated falls to 60mm possible.”

The heavy rain is expected to drop below warning thresholds by late Tuesday morning.

Driving conditions have been described as “dangerous” during Monday evening due to reduced visibility, with motorists asked to allow for extra travel time and to drive to the conditions.

Partly cloudy. Very high chance of showers, tending to rain, in the late afternoon and evening. The chance of a thunderstorm in the late afternoon and evening. Light winds becoming north to northwesterly 15 to 20km/h in the late afternoon then becoming light in the evening.

Burnie/Devonport – Min 12, Max 19

Partly cloudy, becoming cloudy in the afternoon. Very high chance of rain in the afternoon and evening. The chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening. Light winds becoming southeasterly 15 to 20km/h in the morning then tending easterly 15 to 25 km/h in the middle of the day.

Smithton – Min 11, Max 21

Partly cloudy, becoming cloudy in the afternoon. Very high chance of rain, most likely in the afternoon and evening. The chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening. Heavy falls possible. Winds easterly and light increasing to 15 to 25 km/h in the morning then tending east to northeasterly 25 to 35 km/h in the middle of the day.

Hobart – Min 13, Max 21

Partly cloudy, becoming cloudy in the evening. High chance of showers at night. Light winds.
