Organisers said the 2026 tournament drew record-breaking attendance. Ahead of that event, they had expected more than 17,000 spectators across the week.

Hobart International tournament director Darren Sturgess said the success of January’s tournament had set the bar high for its return.

“It was a fantastic reminder of the calibre of players Hobart fans can see up close.”

Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion making her first trip to Tasmania, lost to sixth seed Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-3. During her visit, she said she had “waited so long and always wanted to play here. Best place on earth.”

Sturgess said the tournament was about bringing people together.

“It gives Tasmanians the chance to experience world-class international sport on their doorstep, while showcasing everything that makes this state such a fantastic place to visit,” he said.

He said the event had the continued support of the Tasmanian government through Events Tasmania and delivered economic, tourism and community benefits.

The government committed $1.5 million over five years to support the tournament through to 2027.
