Under Attack: Campaign Launched to Combat Rising Antisocial Behavior

As the holiday season approaches, the City of Hobart and Crime Stoppers Tasmania are working together to ensure that shopping in the Hobart CBD is safe and enjoyable for everyone. The Shop Safe campaign empowers both traders and shoppers to promote public safety by providing a clear path to report any antisocial behavior they witness.

City Economy Portfolio Chair Ald. Louise Bloomfield said that as the year comes to a close, the CBD will be welcoming even more people than usual as people shop, dine, and connect with others.

“Hobart is generally a really safe place, but unfortunately thefts or other harmful activities do still occur.

“We want everyone who works, visits, or shops in our city to feel confident that they will be safe and know what to do if they see something wrong.”

Crime Stoppers Tasmania CEO David Higgins emphasizes that there is a shared role and responsibility to ensure that Hobart is safe for all to enjoy. “This campaign aims to equip retailers and the community with a path to reporting,” he said. “We want to deter, disrupt, and detect those whose bad behavior impacts negatively on others.”

If you see a crime occurring, you can contact Tasmania Police on 000. If you know the names or details of people who are causing disturbance or shoplifting, you can contact Crime Stoppers with your information, without having to get involved.

Tasmania Police Inspector Andrew Keane is reminding people that Tasmania is a very safe place to live, but unfortunately there are a small number of people who engage in antisocial and unlawful behavior such as stealing.

Small business owners and staff can also take simple measures to deter shoplifters, such as increasing visibility, strategically placing stock, and installing CCTV and other internal security arrangements within stores.

Tasmanian Small Business Council CEO Robert Mallett said that keeping our streets and our places of work safe is a prime concern of the small business community.

“Hobart is Tasmania’s biggest shopping center, and it is imperative that we ensure that it is a safe and enjoyable place for all customers to come and visit.”

Everyone has a role to play in helping to keep our cities and communities safe. If you know something, say something. The Shop Safe campaign will continue throughout the summer, so be sure to report any suspicious activity and help make Hobart’s CBD a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
