Tasmania’s average unleaded petrol price has climbed to $2.47 a litre, with October shaping up as the most expensive month for unleaded in the past year.

FuelCheck TAS data shows unleaded has risen by about two cents over the past seven days, while diesel is averaging $2.89 a litre, down about one cent over the same period.

Over the past four weeks, average prices for both fuels have risen by about 30 cents a litre, with most of the increase coming in mid-September.

The 12-month average is $1.96 a litre for unleaded and $2.26 for diesel.

In February, unleaded averaged $1.76 a litre and diesel $1.86. Since then, unleaded has risen by about 41% and diesel by about 55%.

Diesel now costs about 42 cents a litre more than unleaded. In February, the gap was about 10 cents.

The change follows the end of federal fuel excise relief on August 2.

Despite the higher prices, the state government says Tasmania’s fuel supply remains secure.

Its latest fuel supply update, released late last week, showed the state had 65 days of petrol and 51 days of diesel available as of September 29, including fuel in transit.

All five of Tasmania’s fuel terminals are stocked and more than 98% of service stations are fully stocked, the update said.

“Tasmania’s fuel supply is secure,” the government said on its TasALERT website.

“We recognise that Tasmanians are experiencing the flow-on effects of higher fuel prices.”

Free bus and ferry travel in Tasmania continues until June 30 next year.
