Police breath tested more than 200 motorists during a three-hour road safety operation in Launceston’s CBD on Friday night.

The operation, run by police and the Department of State Growth, was set up in the Birchalls carpark from 8pm to 11pm.

Of 216 random breath tests conducted, three drink drivers were allegedly detected, police said.

A 36-year-old woman allegedly refused a breath analysis after recording a high roadside reading.

Her licence was immediately disqualified for two years and she was arrested at the scene.

A 25-year-old woman allegedly recorded a reading of 0.135 – almost three times the legal limit of 0.05.

A 26-year-old man allegedly recorded a reading of 0.084, also over the legal limit.

All three drivers will face court at a later date.

Five oral fluid tests were also conducted during the operation, with one driver testing positive for illicit drugs.

Police said an unlicensed driver, a suspended driver and an unregistered vehicle were also detected, along with a provisional driver who failed to display P-plates.

Transport inspectors issued 39 defect notices, mostly for non-compliant tyres, windscreens and headlights.

Police urged motorists to ensure their vehicles were roadworthy heading into the cooler months.
