An unregistered, large farm tractor that has been ‘unroadworthy’ for 7 years was among the vehicles pulled over during a traffic blitz on the Tasman Highway yesterday.

The “disappointing” operation in Sorrel saw around 350 motorists undertake either a random breath or drug test and vehicle safety check.

A total of 22 defect notices were issued, along with 3 positive drug tests, 1 insecure load notice and 1 speeding notice.

Inspector Jon Cooper said “nearly 1 in 10 vehicles” were found with an issue.

“Common defects discovered today include bald tyres, non-functioning lighting and unsafe vehicle damage,” Cooper said.

“We are reminding road users of the need to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and safe to operate at all times.”

“We will continue to conduct high visibility operations in the future to ensure all road users are accountable for their actions and to keep the Tasmanian community safe.”
