The Bureau of Meteorology are warning of damaging winds of up to and potentially over 100km/h across much of Southern Tasmania this afternoon.

Strong westerly winds averaging 50 to 60km/h are expected to hit New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston, Dover, Huonville and Bagdad from Thursday afternoon and into Friday morning.

The BOM say the gusts will develop in the afternoon as an approaching cold front brings a “vigorous westerly flow over southern and southeastern parts” of the state.

“Winds are expected to drop below warning thresholds during Friday afternoon,” say the Bureau.
