Dorset Council in Tasmania’s North-East is considering a series of road upgrades in the coming year, including improvements to the Derby back road.
The two-kilometer stretch, which is a popular mountain biking destination, is expected to cost between $8 million and $10 million to upgrade.
The road improvements will enable heavy vehicles to bypass Derby’s main street, which is narrow and winding.

State government funding is key to the project, which is hoped to be completed in the next three to four months.
In the long term, the Bridport marina and Derby back road upgrades are the council’s priorities.
The council is also looking forward to the beginning of the $120 million Sideling upgrade and Bridport street upgrades.
Dorset Council Mayor Greg Howard says the projects are expected to provide a ‘major economic boost’ to the region and improve safety for vehicles.
