Police believe a ute may have crossed onto the wrong side of the Bass Highway before a head-on crash that killed a 10-year-old girl overnight.

Tasmania Police said preliminary investigations indicated the white Toyota Hilux crossed into the opposite lane near Doctors Rocks in Tasmania’s north-west around 5:35pm on Thursday.

The ute then collided head-on with a white Subaru on the highway.

The cause of the crash has not been confirmed and investigations are continuing.

Police have also confirmed the Subaru was being driven by a 65-year-old woman who is a member of the girl’s family.

The woman was flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital on Thursday night with serious injuries. She remains in a serious condition.

The girl, who was from the state’s north-west, was a passenger in the Subaru and died at the scene.

The two occupants of the Hilux, a man and a woman in their early 20s, were taken to the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie.
