Vegetation fire breaks out south of Hobart after powerline falls

A vegetation fire has broken out south of Hobart this morning after a powerline fell on Sandfly Road at Margate.

The road is currently blocked in both directions between the Huon Highway and Channel Highway.

Police said motorists should seek an alternate route and expect delays.

TasNetworks reported five outages in the South region on Monday morning, affecting 1,000 properties in Dover to Southport, 575 in the Allens Rivulet and Sandfly area and 400 in Lachlan and New Norfolk.

The estimated restoration time for all outages has yet to be confirmed.

The outages come as a severe weather warning is in place for much of Tasmania today, with gusts in excess of 120km/h already recorded.

Winds reached 106km/h on Cape Bruny at 8:16am and 152km/h at the summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington a short time later.
