A P-plate driver will lose his licence after being caught speeding twice in less than 90 minutes during a weekend police blitz in Launceston’s CBD.
The P1 driver was first clocked at 65km/h in a 50km/h zone on Lindsay Street near Riverbend Park around 8:45pm on Saturday.
Just over an hour later, the same driver was caught travelling 66km/h in a 40km/h zone on Paterson Street. He was booked for both offences.
Police and Taskforce Raven officers ran static and mobile operations on Saturday night targeting the ‘Fatal Five’ – speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, inattention and fatigue.
Officers issued infringements to nine speeding drivers, three people not wearing seat belts and four motorists who ran red or yellow lights. One driver was pinged for undue noise.
A 50-year-old man driving a white ute was clocked at 77km/h in a 40km/h zone on Paterson Street – almost double the limit.
He faces a $615 fine and five demerit points.
The Saturday operation followed a 3.5-hour blitz on Friday night involving police, Taskforce Raven and transport inspectors.
That operation netted two drink drivers, including a P-plater who is not permitted any alcohol in their system.
Police also issued 41 defect notices, mostly for faulty lights and tyres, and intercepted four unregistered vehicles, three drivers without P-plates and one unaccompanied learner.
Tasmania Police said the high-risk driving put other road users and vulnerable pedestrians at risk.
“The message is simple, slow down and always obey the speed limits,” police said.
