Hobart’s former police headquarters could become apartments under a $5 million plan lodged with the city council.
The 10-storey building at 47 Liverpool Street, on the corner of Argyle Street, would be converted into 17 apartments and a ground-floor cafe.
The site sits on a prominent CBD corner opposite the Royal Hobart Hospital and covers around 1,513 square metres.
For decades the building has served as the Tasmania Police state headquarters.

The proposal, lodged in April by Era Advisory on behalf of Stewart Group Hobart Pty Ltd, retains the existing 1979 structure and facades.
Sixteen three-bedroom units are planned across the middle levels, with a 478-square-metre four-bedroom penthouse on the top floor.

The ground floor and Level 1 would be reworked into 40 car parking spaces for residents.
External changes are minor and include new garage doors, timber-look aluminium battens and a new canopy at the penthouse level.
The building was sold by Sydney-based Sandran Pty Limited, which had owned it for around two decades, in a deal lodged in March.
The marketing agent said at the time of listing that the police had outgrown the site and flagged its strong potential for residential conversion.

The property was valued between $17 million and $18 million when it went to market.
A broad range of police, fire and emergency management staff are due to vacate before the state government lease expires on June 30.
The Hobart City Council is now assessing the application, with public comment open through to June 9.
