The latest image of the proposed Hobart stadium at Macquarie Point has been released as plans for the multi-purpose facility continue to take shape.
Macquarie Point Development Corporation CEO Anne Beach said the stadium will provide an “exciting arena” for various sports and is being designed with fans, performers, operators and event managers in mind.
“We’ve incorporated a dedicated stage area into the northern stand, providing easy access and proximity to removable seating,” she said.
“The stage will be integrated into the seating bowl rather than on the field, allowing for a flexible configuration to suit different event formats.”
The stadium will be the largest timber roofed stadium in the world when completed and will become home to the Tasmania Devil’s AFL team.
However, Beach emphasised that the stadium is about ‘more than just the AFL’.
“Modern venues need to adapt to changing demands,” she said.
“Our design ensures the stadium can host major concerts and tours while also accommodating smaller festivals and shows.”
The $700 million project continues to face criticism from some in the community and nearby stakeholders, including the RSL, who have suggested using the already ruled out Stadium 2.0 instead.
In July, Sports and Events Minster Nic Street said a submission to the Project of State Significance process was expected to be made by the end of the month.
In emails to stakeholders, Executive Commissioner of the Tasmanian Planning Commission John Ramsay said he has been advised the MPDC “may submit” full documentation for the assessment “at the end of August”.
