Disability advocates in Tasmania have welcomed changes by the state government to increase the availability of wheelchair taxis.

Under the new regulations, operators are required to complete a minimum of 30 wheelchair trips per month, and must prioritize bookings from wheelchair-accessible patrons.

The move has been seen as a positive step towards improving accessibility for people with disabilities.

However, advocates continue to push for more accessible transport options in the North-West region of the state, which currently faces significant challenges in this regard.

The changes, which came into effect on July 1, have already shown an increase in demand for wheelchair taxis.

Advocates believe the new changes will not only benefit individuals with disabilities but also incentivize the transportation industry to cater to their needs.
