Will Magnay has been voted captain of the Tasmania JackJumpers for a second consecutive season ahead of NBL27.
The longest-serving player on the Hobart-based club’s roster was chosen by his teammates in a vote this morning, with coach Scott Roth announcing the leadership group before training.
Josh Bannan and Taran Armstrong will serve as vice captains.
Magnay is the only rostered player who has been with the JackJumpers since the club entered the NBL in 2021-22.
He takes over a second season in charge after replacing inaugural captain Clint Steindl, who held the role for four years before retiring.
The appointment comes after the JackJumpers missed the finals last season for the first time and rebuilt their roster over the off-season.
Magnay, who also captains the Australian Boomers, re-signed with the club on a two-year deal earlier this year.
Roth praised the significance of the role when addressing the playing group.
“It’s always a great honour to represent your team and to do it in our environment it is quite special in the amount of territory we cover across the state and the importance that you have across the board,” he said.
Magnay told his teammates the appointment meant a great deal to him.
“Thank you, it’s a massive honour, especially with the character of this group to be voted in, it’s really special for me,” he said.
“I play for my family and Tasmania and now to be out in front playing for you guys as well it’s super special to me.”
“Thank you so much and I’ll do what I can to lead us the right way and I have amazing help in Taran and JB.”
Magnay is a four-time club defensive player of the year and holds the JackJumpers all-time records for rebounds at 532 and blocks at 150.
He was also crowned players player at the club’s 2023-24 MVP awards.
Bannan joined the JackJumpers in NBL26 and had a debut season that included several club records and the team’s most valuable player award.
Armstrong is the first born and bred Tasmanian to sign as a rostered player with the club.
